Community Action Academy
Community Action Academy Overview
CAP Riverside has offered free and low-cost community training and technical assistance in Riverside County for the past 22 years. The program, tabbed The Community Action Academy (CAP Academy), supports CAP Riverside’s vision of “Ending Poverty in Riverside County.” Courses focus on building the capacity of organizations to sustain their services. Core workshops include, but are not limited to: Leadership Development; Organizational Development; Programs and Services Development; Fund Development; and Community Development. The CAP Academy offers other courses such as mediation, anti-poverty strategies, advocacy, etc. Custom courses are also available. Courses and technical assistance are open to any individual or agency who wants to improve their skills.
In 2007, CAP Riverside received funding to expand its curriculum from basic to advanced capacity building courses. A peer mentoring component was added to provide one-to-one coaching for those agencies developing such tools as strategic plans, filing for non-profit status, or developing administrative polices and procedures. The funding also allowed CAP Riverside to develop a community repository for poverty-related data. This repository enables local agencies to utilize social mapping to support their programs and proposals with “pictures” of economic, cultural, social diversity, etc. found throughout the county.
